The Far Side comic strip

Synopsis

The Chickens are Restless is the fourteenth collection of The Far Side comic strips. All comic strips are in black and white. These are all single shots, not the normal 4-panel comic strips. The Far Side is a humorous comic strip that appeared in a multitude of newspapers daily. Every Sunday comic strip has been water-colored and gray-washed.

The Far Side became very popular in the early 1980's, and continued into the 1990's, until Gary Larson decided that he was going to retire the comic strip. It was seen daily in hundred of newspapers and enjoyed by millions. The Far Side is just as the name imply...just on the far side of sane. Most of the strips feature humans, but not all. If an animal is the main character, then they are usually placed in the shoes of a human. Most of the Far Side strips deal with the stupid things humans do in every day things. Other strips deals with things that are just totally wacky. Either way, they make fun of us and everything we do. And since it is human nature to laugh at the misfortune of others . . . you will probably find this comic strip to be very funny.

Review

The Chickens are Restless is an interesting collection of the Far Side comic strips. In the early-1990's, I was busy finishing up college and working at SEGA in the video game test department. I didn't get the newspaper and never had much time anyway, usually reading books instead in my spare time. So, I never had a chance to read any of these strips when they came out.

Almost twenty years later, I was finally able to sit down and read this book, which I picked up on eBay. I was disappointed that someone cut out an entire page and on another page, cut out one of the strips. Bummer for me. I wonder what I missed and if they were the most entertaining in this book?

This collection is not the funniest of the Far Side comic strips. You start to see a glimmer of why Gary Larson stopped creating this wonderful series . . . he was running out of ideas. With no main characters, like in Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, or Bloom County, Mr. Larson always had to come up with fresh ideas. That must have been very difficult.

I had trouble finding a strip to display for this review and came up with five that made me chuckle. But some of them weren't all that funny, just interesting. Plus, there were a couple that I just plain didn't understand.

The Chickens are Restless is a good collection from the weird and funky mind of Gary Larson. It is not his best collection, but if you are a lover of the Far Side, then you need to pick this one up and see for yourself.
