Synopsis

The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson is a collection of Calvin and Hobbes comic strips. This book includes cartoons from Yukon Ho! and Weirdos From Another Planet! A color, seven-page story appears in the beginning of the book. The Sunday cartoons appear in color while the daily cartoons appear in black and white.

This collection contains the following storylines: magic flying carpet, the doctor visit, the rainy camping trip, the time machine, Yukon ho, Uncle Max, planet Mercury report, Transmorgrifier, the babysitter, Calvin the tiger, the archaeological expedition, the broken binoculars, the camping trip, the helium balloon, the zoo, Calvin the plumber, mission to Mars, sick, and the introduction of . . . Stupendous Man and the evil Mom-Lady!

Calvin and Hobbes became very popular in the mid-1980's, and continued into the 1990's, until Bill Watterson decided that he was going to retire the comic strip. It was seen daily in hundred of newspapers and enjoyed by millions. Calvin is a quirky 6 years old boy who has a pet stuffed animal tiger names Hobbes. But to Calvin, Hobbes is alive. Together, they constantly get into mischief. Hobbes often acts as Calvin's conscious, but being a tiger, he also acts upon his whims. Calvin's parents can also be quite funny. Calvin always seems to be testing his mother. And Calvin's father's explanations of how things work are always hilarious. And then there is Calvin's arch nemesis, Susie. Usually innocent of all wrongdoing, Calvin loves to harass her. But she always beats Calvin in the end.

Review

Calvin always makes me smile. And reading these specific cartoons again after 10 years, brings back a lot of memories. These are the ones that really made me fall in love with character.

I used to look forward to grabbing the daily newspaper and reading Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side. Calvin is the type of boy that I would have liked to have been, but definitely not the kind of boy that I would never want to have.

The Authoritative Calvin and Hobbes is the type of book that can be read over and over again . . . and still make you smile, or even laugh.
