Synopsis

Miss Marsha White is running an errand to buy her mother a gold thimble that she saw advertised in the local paper. The item is on sale at Brimble's Department Store, which happens to reside in the Twilight Zone. Marsha hops in the elevator, and the elevator man takes her to the eighteenth floor. When she arrives on the floor, it looks deserted until Marsha discovers a saleswoman selling just what she wanted. In fact, she only has one thing: a gold thimble.

Marsha buys the thimble for $25.00 with cash and gets back into the elevator. When she goes to show the thimble to the elevator man, she notices that it is both dented and scratched. He drops Marsha off on the third floor so she can go to the Complaints Department. When she informs the store manager, Mr. Sloan, that the elevator man took her to the eighteenth floor, Mr. Sloan informs her that they don't have an elevator man and that the store doesn't have an eighteenth floor. To top it off, the saleswoman never gave Marsha a receipt for the thimble and since she paid cash, there is no record of the transaction.

Marsha turns and thinks that she sees the saleswoman who sold her the thimble, but is shocked to find that the saleswoman is actually a mannequin. This causes Marsha to faint, and when she awakens, she finds herself in the store after hours and everybody has left . . . or so she thinks. As Marsha walks around, she keeps hearing her name called out and starts to become anxious. All of the mannequins seem to be watching her as she runs for sanctuary in the elevator. But when the elevator stops at the eighteenth floor again, Marsha knows that things are about to change.

Review

The After Hours has always been one of my favorite The Twilight Zone episodes. I remember feeling sorry for Anne Francis, the actress who played Miss Marsha White, as she couldn't seem to understand what was going on. The feel of the eerily quiet, dark, and cavernous department store at night would give anyone the willies. T

he graphic novel does an excellent job of bringing forth these emotions in the reader. The glossy paper and the coloring help create the atmosphere and send the reader spiraling down into The Twilight Zone. The adaptation by Mark Kneece from Rod' Serling's television script is wonderful and makes the story work quite well.

The illustrations by Rebekah Isaacs are great and totally bring back the feel of the original television episode. She has made the story look a little more modern, yet keeps that same feel as if the story were still being told in 1960. This might be a little confusing for younger readers as they might wonder how anyone could buy a gold thimble for $25.00 these days. It would have been nice if at the beginning if the story it stated that this tale takes place in 1960.

Overall, I quite enjoyed reading The After Hours and highly anticipate the next book. There are a ton of stories that stick out in my mind that I would love to see in graphic novel format. Let's just hope that Walker Books has picked the right stories to publish. I bet they do.

I rated this book a 9 out of 10.
