Chakotay and his crew of Marquis
are being pursued by a Cardassian ship. After sustaining damage,
they head into in the Badlands, a highly volatile part of space,
and are caught up in a tetyon beam and disappear. Back on Earth.
Captain Janeway travels to New Zealand to seek out the criminal
Tom Paris to help her find the Marquis ship that has her first
officer, Tuvok, acting as spy on it. The Voyager travels to the
Badlands and subsequently caught in a tetyon beam also and transported
over 70,000 light years away
basically to the other side
of the galaxy. While visiting the structure that is maintained
by the Caretaker, the being that brought them there, they learn
that some something is wrong with the Caretaker. They are soon
returned to their ships, after finding the Marquis in stasis
on the Caretakers structure, they find that a crew member
from both ships has not been returned; Ensign Harry Kim for the
Voyager and BElanna Torres, the engineer, for the Marquis
ship. They soon learn that their crewmembers are no longer with
the Caretaker, not having what the Caretaker required. Shortly
there after, they run into Neelix and he leads them to the world
of the Ocampa, a desolate planet with absolutely no water on
it. The Ocampa are protected by the Caretaker, and Tuvok deduces
that the Caretaker is dying. And just when the rescue effort
is under way, the Caretaker starts firing plasma blasts at the
planet. Now how are they going to get back home to the other
side of the galaxy?
This is the first book in the
Star Trek: Voyager series. The number of the book is 1. It is
based upon the characters on the television show Star Trek: Voyager
and is the pilot episode of the series. This story takes place
during the first season of the show, so Kes is still on board
and Seven of Nine has not yet joined the crew.
I found the characters to be
amazing true to the television series of today, even after 5
years. The writing style was easy to read and the story moves
along. But like the beginning of the show, this episode, if you
can call a book an episode, is not all that exciting. But it
is the introduction to all of the character and I found it nice
to get reacquainted with them. There are also a lot of people
on the ship mentioned that either die, like the first officer,
helmsman, and the doctor, that I had forgotten about. I knew
that they had to die, but like when I was watching the movie
Titanic and was hoping that they would never run
into the iceberg, I found myself really liking these characters
and wanted them to survive. I guess a writer, or writers in this
case, can do this with good characterization. So, for all of
you Star Trek: Voyager fans out there, this is a must read because
it is the first book in the series. I did find myself enjoying
the story, and you will too.
I rated this book a 7 out of
