The Vulcan Examined the Jeweled Dagger Dispassionately…

It was beautiful, made by a fine craftsman on an unknown planet far away. Spock silently thanked the artisan for creating such an object of beauty for his purpose, then spoke to Julina, beside him on the stone pallet.

”I had no intention of asking you to assist me, but I feel I am too weak to use the knife effectively.”

”I won’t! I can’t!” the Romulan sobbed, but she knew Spock’s Vulcan logic would prove the request a necessary one.

”Julina, don’t make me beg for your help…” Spock gripped her hand tightly.

He guided her hand, placing the dagger above his heart.

”Now,” he commanded her.

Review

An explosion rocks the bridge of the Enterprise. Most of the trainees are dead, shielding the main crew members. Captain James T. Kirk lays close to death. Spock takes a piece of shrapnel in the back right beside his spine. After Doctor Bones McCoy removes the metal, he informs Spock that a sliver still remains close to his spine and that Spock will need to become sufficiently healthy enough so that he can be operated on again to remove the sliver. Spock ignores Bones’ advice and walks out of sick bay and gets together with Mister Scott, the Chief Engineer. Together, they gather some evidence that points to a stranger being on board and planting the bomb. After a hearing is held and their theories are rejected, Spock and Scotty steal a shuttle and head towards a solar system that Spock had found drawn on a piece of paper hoping that it would lead them to the assassin. On the planet they are captured by three Romulans who are in turn captured by three Klingons. Then they are all captured, except for one of the Klingons who gets shot, by a race called the Tomarii. They are taken back to the Tomarii’s home planet, a dying planet between two suns, and trained for fighting. Little do they know that Spock is injured. And, since there is barely and plant life on the planet, Spock is slowly starving to death, refusing to eat the meat. Just when things are looking their bleakest for Spock and Scotty, the Enterprise rescues them. Spock is sentenced to serve a term in prison. Kirk is torn about this decision and wishes his friend back on the bridge of the Enterprise. Spock soon escapes with a Romulan and forms an allegiance with him. Pirate activity has increased in a section of Federation space and James Kirk is assigned to find the pirate Black Fire. Kirk soon captures Black Fire and rips the cowl off of the pirate’s face, only to find Spock looking dispassionately at him. Now what is Jim to do?

This is a Star Trek story with the original crew of the USS Enterprise. It is Star Trek #8. It appears to take place before the first movie, but while Jim was still captain of his ship. The uniform change from the original ones in the television show to the gray ones seen in the first movie takes place in this book.

At first I found this book to be a little slow. But once Spock got into prison, and from that point onward, I became really engrossed in the story. The story has its fair share of twists and turns and is an enjoyable read. The story mostly revolves around Spock, with a little bit of Kirk and Scotty. This story takes place on a lot of planets throughout both Federation and Romulan space. It is well told and a fun read.

I rated this book an 8 out of 10.
