Synopsis

Billy and the Boingers Bootleg is the fourth collection of Bloom County comic strips. The Sunday comic strips appear in color and are clumped into small groups of two to four strips and may not necessarily follow the dailies in their designated spots, which can be a little confusing if the Sunday was in reference to the previous week’s happenings. All of the dailies appear in black and white.

At the beginning of the book are two songs and their lyrics. The songs are by Billy and the Boingers, which has Steve Dallas as the lead vocalist, "Wild" Bill Cat playing the Electric Tongue, Opus Croakus, looking like Gene Simmons of KISS, playing the electric tuba, and Hodge-Podge playing drums. The songs are "I'm a Boinger" and "U-Stink-But-I-Love-U." Between pages 10 and 11 is an insert of a 33 1/3 speed record that has both songs on it. This can be torn out of the book and played on a record player.

Bloom County became very popular in the early 1980’s. The characters that Berke Breathed created are a lot of fun to read about. The only new characters added in this book is Lola, Opus's fiance, and Rosebud, the Basselope.

The following storylines appear in this book: Communist Bill, Sean Penn vs. Steve Dallas, Star Wars, Opus' Biological Clock is Ticking, Franklin Fights Dish Scrambling, Lola, The Royals, Opus the Cartoonist, Teleportation, Rosebud the Basselope, Opus's In-Laws, Deathtöngue, Steve Quits Smoking, Romantic Land Mines, Billy and the Boingers, As Good As It Gets, and First Tour.

Review

Bloom County will always remain in my heart as one of the best comic strips ever. Although it had a relatively short run, the characters the Berke Breathed created can never be forgotten. In this book, the storylines are extended and there are rarely any one-shots.

This book has some of my favorite storylines, like Deathtöngue and Lola. I find these strips to be extremely entertaining. I love seeing Opus dressed up like Gene Simmons in Deathtöngue. That just cracks me up!

You just can't go wrong reading any Bloom County book and Billy and the Boingers Bootleg is a gem.

One last thing . . . I have always wanted to play the record in the book to see what Billy and the Boingers sound like. Maybe someday . . .

Good news. I was contacted by a reader who gave me the link for downloading mp3 versions of both songs: "I'm a Boinger" and "U-Stink-But-I-Love-U." I love U-Stink-But-I-Love-U. It is great. Love the tuba. Go Opus Croakus!
